Institutions of ITV and Channel 5 :

In order to gain some understanding of the institution behind ITV I have researched using this website: http://www.itv.com/commissioning/factual

Jo Clinton-Davis, the controller of factual entertainment and Commissioning Editors such as Priya Singh and Satmohan Panesar explain that some of the appeal of factual shows is often created by a famous name or a well-known location being explored. My intentions for my show was to obtain a sense of realism, and intend to focus on the working-class and gain individual stories that aren't well-known; therefore my intentions contrast to the requirements needed for some factual shows on ITV.

The Commissions team explains that the factual shows are most suited for the 8pm and 9pm time slot, this is similar to the time slot of Channel 5. Despite this time slot allowing me to target my chosen audience, the current shows on ITV are less authentic and cover more mainstream topics that I am aiming to cover.

By researching into the institutions of Channel 5 I am able to finalise that I want my show to be broadcasted on that channel; i used this website to find this information: http://www.channel5.com/programme-production/

Ben Frow is the Director of Programming for Channel 5, and he has emphasised that Channel 5 is wanting more factual and authentic shows, "we particularly like factual shows – Specialist Factual, Documentaries and Factual Entertainment." He explains that the channel want engaging and original shows, and they are looking for shows of all variety in terms of styles and textures. Frow indicates that the slot times for new shows are between 8pm and 9pm, which would allow me to direct my show to a mainstream millennial audience as I would be able to cover mature topics as it's post-watershed.

Emma Westcott is one of the Commissioning Editors for Channel 5, and she suggests that "broad, robust documentary series" are the main priority for the channel at the moment; she also emphasises Frow's point that the slot for factual shows is 8pm-9pm. Lucy Willis is also a Commissioning Editor for Channel 5, and she suggests that she is looking for factual shows that obtain a different and unique perspective on topics. This has made me want to produce my documentary from almost the people's perspective I am observing, and the majority of the information I get from homeless people will be from their personal experiences. I will avoid stereotyping, and give each person I interview the chance to show their individual stories, and therefore gain a variety of perspectives on the issue. Willis also explains that she is interested in observatory documentaries with a broad appeal, which fits well with my intentions for my documentary to be observing and understanding stories from the people I am interviewing. Willis' intentions for new documentaries also allows me to broaden my target audience to all genders, and all ethnicities as she suggests that Channel 5 are looking for shows that target a wide audience.

Overall I have decided the style of my show will fit best with Channel 5, and best suits the elements that Lucy Willis is looking for in new factual shows. I want to take on board the requirements she wants for a new show, and I will aim my show at millennials aged 18-35 to create a broad appeal. i will also use the 8pm-9pm time slot that Ben Frow explains is the most suited for a documentary.

Front page for magazine (planning + drafts):

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. I also left room on the top of the shot, to allow me to use a large, and bold title to create clarity and an appeal for my audie...
