Media Coursework (Lola)

My front cover will be for a male's lifestyle magazine; and will create a further sense of convergence between my audio-visual and magazine elements. I will promote my show 'More Than Homeless' on the front cover; in bold, and in the same colour scheme as the title of the show in the documentary and using the same restricted colour palette in my double page spread. To create a celebrity appeal I will use a photo of an actor I created, named Rob Young. Rob Young will have starred in the latest social realist film called 'The Struggle' which will focus on an individual man's challenges he faced on the streets. The Magazine: REVEAL  Style and Format: The magazine will sell at  £3.99, as the readers have a B1/B2 socioeconomic grouping; and the content and style of the magazine is high-end and sophisticated. However, the magazine is still affordable for it's audience of 20-35year olds, who will have stable jobs. The front cover is nearly always a celebrity, as the brand identity is of a high status; and the main content of the magazine is main up of celebrity interviews. The front cover will be eye-catching, and colourful to attract and appeal to the magazine's millennial audience. The title will always be the same, and positioned in the top left corner; to create a familiarity of the brand. The articles in the magazine will mainly be formal to relate to the highly educated readers; however, the format of the articles will always include images that are gripping and appealing to the reader. Fulfilling the brief: I feel as if my cross production has fulfilled the brief sufficiently, as I have produced all original work and have performed the tasks needed.  I have interpreted the secondary research into my work; as well as being influenced by the forms of primary research I conducted in terms of talking to individuals  at Jimmy's and on the streets. I have demonstrated convergence through my magazine and my audio-visual; in terms of brand identity of the magazine, and the stylistic elements such as the restricted colour palette and the subject choice. I used images from the audio-visual in the double page spread, and reflected the stories my documentary touched on in my magazine; this created further convergence. As in terms of my audio visual I have stayed within the time limit as it's just under 3minutes. First Draft: Content: In order to create convergence from my documentary and my magazine I included images of the medium-close up shots I took while filming of the individuals. I used images of the individuals looking happy, and pensive to show a more positive and appealing image on the individuals. By using action codes, as I selected stills from the individuals as they were speaking; it creates anticipation for the release of the documentary. I used simplistic images to create clarity with my article, as my main focus was the content; particularly the individual's stories. To link my content to my front page, I used direct speech from Rob Young to add a sense of a celebrity appeal. This will target my audience even further, and links to the conventions of lifestyle magazines, which often have a significant celebrity contribution. Final Draft: I changed the barcode to be a smaller size, and I changed in to be in the bottom left hand corner. I also altered some of the font sizes, and the boldness of the fonts to provide clarity of the articles. To populate the page further I added another article title, 'HOW TO SPOT A FRAUDSTER' as I believe this economic element to the content of the magazine will target my audience further. As well as that, I added a small yellow rectangle in the corner of the page with my documentary's title in it. This promotes my show boldly, and engages the audience; the colour of the rectangle also converges with the article title and the documentary title. 

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. In terms of primary research, I spoke to some people on the streets of Cambridge who were sleeping rough. I found that they displayed similar answers as to the individuals in Jimmy’s Night Shelter; most people wanted company or acknowledgement. One man also described how he felt excluded by society further as shops often kicked him out of their doorways at night, or made him move away from their shops despite him not being on their property. One woman said the worst thing about being on the streets is being lonely, and people often view people on the streets as dangerous or violent; so, avoid contact with them. I found by gathering the statistics and information from talking to individuals, and gaining secondary research from official statistics; it creates a sense of realism to my content. I used iMovie to produce my documentary as I believed this would give me the correct tools to fulfil the brief, and my idea for my audio visual. After filming the interviews in the Jimmy’s homeless shelter, I transferred each 15minute interview to iMovie; I then selected the most significant and hard-hitting parts of the interviews. I cut down the interviews to about 4 minutes each, and then choose the 2 questions I wanted to focus in on in my documentary. I selected the questions ‘What has been a significant moment or a turning point in your life?’ as this would allow me to response to the ‘turning point’ part of the brief. I also selected the question, ‘What advice would you have given yourself 10years ago?’ As this question lead to heartfelt and gripping answers from each individual.
