Closing document :

Fulfilling the brief:

I feel as if my cross production has fulfilled the brief sufficiently, as I have produced all original work and have performed the tasks needed. I have interpreted the secondary research into my work; as well as being influenced by the forms of primary research I conducted in terms of talking to individuals at Jimmy's and on the streets. I have demonstrated convergence through my magazine and my audio-visual; in terms of brand identity of the magazine, and the stylistic elements such as the restricted colour palette and the subject choice. I used images from the audio-visual in the double page spread, and reflected the stories my documentary touched on in my magazine; this created further convergence.

As in terms of my audio visual I have stayed within the time limit as it's just under 3minutes. I have focused on the 'A key turning point' part of the brief; and I have included a variety of shots and different editing techniques. By using montage editing and sections of continuity editing, I have demonstrated diversity within my product. I believe I have successfully reflected the stylistic elements of factual shows on Channel 5, through my audio-visual. This is through the use of a hand-held camera, establishing shots, dietetic sound, and statistics.  Also have used over 3 filming locations, and over 3 different characters in my show. I have used a range of camera shots, and different sound such as diegetic sound and a soundtrack (dietetic sound).

In terms of my magazine, I have included 3 pages of work; one being my front cover and the others being my double page spread. I have promoted my documentary through my front cover and double page spread, as well as demonstrating the informative tone of Channel 5. I have used multiple cover lines on my front page, including one that promotes my show; I have used a barcode and cover price in the top right corner. My double page spread is over 300words, written in columns, has an interview from the director of the show (Rob Young), and has subheadings.

I believe that my products have a sense of convergence, and reflect the intentions and stylistic elements of Channel 5 factual shows. I feel that I have demonstrated sufficient planning and research; and my action plan shows how I regularly reflected on my work to ensure I fulfilled the brief and my content was effective.

Improvements and Challenges:

I found the editing process challenging in terms of selecting content I felt was the most significant, and therefore cutting out a lot of content I could not use. Sticking to the time restriction of 3minutes was tricky for me, as I wanted to include more content from my interviews. However, I felt after choosing the most effective content I was able to overcome this problem.

I also found the planning stages of the front cover and the double page spread was challenging; as I wanted to use the GQ style but also interpret my own style and idea. To overcome this problem I used brainstorms as well as pitch ideas, to return to my original ideas and style. I found planning in detail and researching into homelessness helped me throughout producing my products.

To improve my coursework, I would have spent more time planning my front cover as I feel more planning would have given me more time to refine the front cover. Also, by spending more time on the magazine as a whole I would have found my final product in terms of my double page spread more impressive. I believe my front cover could have promoted my documentary 'More Than Homeless', more effectively.

Front page for magazine (planning + drafts):

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. I also left room on the top of the shot, to allow me to use a large, and bold title to create clarity and an appeal for my audie...
