This article describes the severity of how the levels of homelessness in Cambridge are rising, and homelessness is an issue that cannot be ignored. The use of photos of homeless people in Cambridge creates a sense of pathos for these people, as well as demonstrating the level of vulnerability and danger these people are in, living on the streets.
Despite creating a sense of pathos for these people, the article from Cambridge News conforms to the usual representation of the homeless; this is shown through the image of a man urinating in public in the market square. This depicts homeless people as reckless, and inconsiderate whereas I want my documentary to show the sense of vunerablity of the people that are homeless. By focusing on what the trigger was to make people homeless, I will emphasise the lack of control these people have in why they ended up in their situation. By exploring articles such as this one, it has become clear to me how vital it is to portray homeless people in a representative and truthful way; by centering my documentary around people's own perspectives and opinions I am giving homeless people the power to represent themselves fairly.
In addition to reading this article, I have watched documentaries on YouTube revealing not only the serious nature of the issue of homelessness in the UK; but also that homeless people are people. I want to interpret this idea into my work more significantly than the emphasis on the figures and statistics. These documentaries, and short videos revealed that the media should focus more on the individuals behind the label of 'homeless'; instead of the issue as a whole.
Watching documentaries and reading articles was also extremely beneficial to me in terms of grasping a better understanding of the style and format of factual shows, and informative articles. Which I hope to reflect and recreate in my cross-media production.
