Initial Research for ITV and Channel 5


In order to gain this information I used radio times website; https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/tv-listings/?sd=13-06-2018%2017:00 

By researching the style of these shows, and the timings of shows on both ITV and Channel 5 it allows me to get a broad overview of the type of shows both channels broadcast. Also this research allows me to find the target audience I want to direct my tv show towards.

ITV: (Wednesday time schedule)

A documentary that goes behind the scenes at Heathrow Airport.
 Docudrama (factual)
By being on post-watershed the show has an audience of adults, and older people. The informative and factual style of the show relates to middle class viewers who have some understanding of the subjects the show covers. The sense of diversity of the show's cast broadens the audience in terms of gender and ethnicity.
ITV News At Ten
10-10:30pm
News show that gives updated information about current affairs.
Political (factual)
The fact that its post-watershed causes the target audience to be older, and therefore the show may cover more mature topics. The informative and educational tone of the show also relate to an older audience, and the wide coverage of global news relate to multiple ethnicities.
ITV Lunchtime
 (Thursday) 1:30pm-2:00pm
News show that gives the audience updated information about current affairs.
 Political (factual)
The timing of the show targets unemployed adults or people on their work break. The lunchtime slot means the content of the show is more appropriate and interesting to younger audiences. The informative and educational tone of the show also relate to an older audience, and the wide coverage of global news relate to multiple ethnicities.
Judge Rinder's Crime Stories,
2pm-2:30pm (Thursday)
Barrister Robert Rinder examines real life crimes.
 Docudrama (factual)
The audience is most likely one that has some understanding of the judicial system, and are educated, (middle class). The fact that there is a male judge relates to other male viewers, (inscription). The timings of the show also allows people that are at home during the day to watch the show, such as the unemployed.
Good Morning Britain,
6-7:30am,
hosted by Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, the show covers current affairs, popular culture, news, lifestyle features.
 Talk show (fictional)
The timings of the show allows parents or working adults to watch the show before work or taking their kids to school. The fact that there is a female and male host that are middle aged further relates to a broad audience of both genders. However, the fact that both hosts are white reduces the target audience.
The Jeremy Kyle Show,
9:30-10:30am
 the host allows families and friends to air their problems with each other such as relationship issues and Jeremy offers advice for the guests.
 Talk show (factual)
The show almost criticises the working class and idolises the middle class, therefore this makes the target audience middle class but also working class as they may feel the show is relatable. The host is male and white therefore relates to other white males. 
Loose Women
12:30-1:30pm,
hosted by all women with guests who join in the topical debates.
 Talk show (factual)
The use of inscription causes the target audience to be majority female. The timing allows some people that are unemployed to watch, or allows people at work on a break to watch. The show covers a wide variety of topics, and has guests of different ages which broadens the target audience.

Hosted by Bradley Marsh & quiz show.

 Game show (fictional)
The fast pace of the show and the complex nature of some of the challenges targets an older audience. The male host also relates to other male viewers. The timing of the show allows people that have finished work to watch the show.
Emmerdale

a soap drama which focuses on a family in the Yorkshire Dales.
 Soap Drama (fictional)
The show represents multiple different ethnicities and genders; however the genre mainly attracts a female audience. The timing of the show allows adults to watch, and also attracts a younger audience.

Going behind the scenes at a local GP and following the GP’s work.
 Docudrama (factual)
The show focuses on multiple GPS, both female and male and covers a wide representation of age and ethnicity. The target audience therefore is young adults.
5 News at 5
5-5:30pm
News show, keeping people updated on current affairs.
 Political / news show (factual)
The timing of the start of the show, allows adults that have finished work to watch. The factual and rigid structure of the show also targets an older audience of middle age or older. 
The Nightmare Neighbour Next Door
7:00pm-8:00pm
Documentary about Britain’s feuding neighbours.
 Docudrama (factual)
The late start to the show allows working adults to watch the show when they are home, and the informative tone also allows the target audience to be older. The show follows different people and therefore the show covers a representation of a variety of genders and ethnicities. This broadens the target audience further.

Documentary exploring the history of a famous prison.
Docudrama (factual)
The factual tone of the show, and the late start aims it towards an older audience. The fact that there is no host only a voiceover allows the show to target broader genders and ethnicities.
Peppa Pig

Kid’s cartoon show following the life of a family of pigs
Animation (fictional)
The timing of the show means its aimed at young children and parents; allows children to watch the show before school. The simplistic nature of the show allows it to target a younger audience. 
Home and Away

Aussie soap drama following the gossip and relationships of the people in Summer Bay in Sydney.

The timing of the start of the show allows adults that are home from work to watch the show. The sense of diversity in the cast in terms of gender, age, and ethnicity broadens the target audience.
Paw Patrol

Kid’s cartoon show following the adventures of a boy and his heroic puppies.

The early schedule of the show allows children to watch it before school, and the fact that this show repeats during the day allows parents to play the show for their kids. The use of inscription of a young boy directs the show to a younger, male audience.

The nearly all white cast uses inscription to target white adults, and the diversity of gender broadens the target audience. The timing of the show allows people at home to watch the show, or people on a lunch break at work. Therefore this further relates to young adults.

The use of inscription forces the show to be mainly aimed at white females, but the genre is stereotypically favoured by men. The quick pace of the show, and the references to the judicial system means its aimed at an educated audience who understand the judicial system.

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. I also left room on the top of the shot, to allow me to use a large, and bold title to create clarity and an appeal for my audie...
