Aims and Intentions :

 AIMS AND INTENTIONS:

I will be producing an expository documentary that interviews homeless individuals in Cambridge; I will focus on how they aren't defined by the label of homelessness but by their pasts and personalities. My documentary will be shown on Channel 5, as the factual tone, and the emotional connection between the characters and the audience best fits the style of their shows. To fulfil the brief, I will focus on a turning point of the characters’ lives and the moments of conflict they faced. By using social realist elements such as low budget images and real stories I will create a sense of realism.

My audience will be males and females aged 20-35years old, and in the social economic group of B1/B2; I will relate my content to a middle-class audience using sophisticated media language like statistics. I will focus on mature topics such as relationships and drugs; as well as exploring emotional issues that my audience can relate to due to their age. Using diegetic sound and montage editing, I will convey each character’s story and create an appeal to my target audience with a fast-paced narrative, diverse characters, and inscription.

I will follow the style of expository documentaries, and Channel 5; with use of establishing shots, eye line-match, montage editing, medium close-ups and a mainly hand-held camera. However, my focus will be on the characters of my show not the interviewer. I will conform to conventions of Channel 5, as I am choosing to represent the working-class, and use an observational tone to the subject of my show. However, my representation of the working-class will be realistic, and will create characters’ individual representations instead of representing their whole social class. This will create my USP of a different perspective on homelessness, as my show focuses on the positive qualities of the individuals, instead of their label.

My article for my lifestyle magazine will promote my documentary, and the contents of my show will link to the front cover as it will show a medium long shot of a celebrity who is playing a homeless man, in the director of my documentary’s movie. I will include conventional topics of a lifestyle magazine such as fashion and health; and my double page spread will compare to Channel 5’s informative tone. I will include medium-long shot stills from my show to create convergence between my cross-media production, as well as social media links. I will use a similar colour palette in my magazine with the text and images in my documentary. Also, I will expand on the stories from the characters in my article to create an emotional connection between the characters and the audience. Using GQ as an influence for my magazine, I will address my audience of mainly males and I will use persuasive language and diverse images to engage my audience. To create familiarity, I will use repetition of the title, log line, characters and narrative images to create a sense of a brand identity with my cross-media production.

Front page for magazine (planning + drafts):

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. I also left room on the top of the shot, to allow me to use a large, and bold title to create clarity and an appeal for my audie...
