Research into Jimmy's Homeless Shelter:

My most significant filming destination is Jimmy's Homeless Shelter in Cambridge; as that is where I will film the characters for the main sequence of my documentary. Also, the stills I take from my documentary will be shot in the shelter. I believe by filming individuals who are either ex-homeless or homeless, will add an authenticity to my content.

Jimmy's is a Homeless Shelter in Cambridge, and opened in 1995; it offers an all-year-round support and care for people living rough. The founders of Jimmy's were Joan and Richard, and created the organisation after having a personal encounter with a homeless man named Jim Dilley. Jim Dilley spent most of his nights under a bridge at the junction 13 on the M11; the shelter was named after Jim, as Joan and Richard got to know him personally. The charity's logo was inspired by Dilley as the logo illustrates a bridge in his memory.

The shelter is in centre of Cambridge and is in the underground section of the Zion Baptist Church; the rooms are often cramped due to the staff's hospitable and kind attitude. However, the staff make it their priority to ensure these individuals are kept away from danger, are fed and have a safe and warm place to sleep.

Jimmy's relies heavily on volunteers and donations, and the compassionate attitudes of the staff. I believe that Jimmy's is a very selfless organisation, and allows vulnerable people to spend the night away from the streets, in order to gain some stability in their lives. The staff provide activities for the guests, and allows them to focus on a more positive mindset and gives them a chance to distance themselves from the dangers of the streets. The staff work on building up guests' emotional well-being, and focus on achieving positive changes to their lives to provide them with a long term or short term adjustment.

Front page for magazine (planning + drafts):

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. I also left room on the top of the shot, to allow me to use a large, and bold title to create clarity and an appeal for my audie...
