Research into Lifestyle Magazines : (overview)

Yours magazine coverThis magazine is aimed at women, to allow them to keep on top of latest fashion trends, diets and some celebrity gossip. There are interviews from people like Twiggy, and Helen Mirren as the magazine is aimed at middle-aged women. There is a lot of health advice, and ways for women over 50years old to stay in shape and healthy. The magazine covers topics like beauty, health, fashion, consumer good, and travel. The magazine promotes a sense of nostalgia as it looks at older fashion trends, but has a sense of variety as it gives expert advice on everyday problems, and health choice. (This magazine doesn't fit my target audience of millennials)

WONDERLAND magazine cover
This magazine is aimed at both men and women of around 20years old (which fits with my target audience); the content portrays visual culture such as film, fashion, art, photography, and other contemporary forms of design. The magazine is positioned in London, but includes content from photographers and creators around the world; as the magazine is globally distributed. The magazine aims to promote young creators content, and by portraying millennial's content it allows the magazine to be creative and unique. (This magazine brand fits perfectly with my intentions and content for my magazine spread)

EXIT magazine cover
This independent magazine contains content about art, photography, and high fashion; and is aimed at an audience around 20years old, (similar to my target audience). The magazine is unique as it contains photography from young photographers, and aims to be authentic and creative. The editorial content embraces a contemporary style. This magazine was founded in 2000 and is lead by photographer Stephen Toner and art director Mark Jubber. (The content doesn't fit my intentions but the target audience of millennials does).

Wonderland magazine
'THE NEXT EPISODE :FENTON AND EMILIA MERKELL ARE KICKSTARTING THEIR OWN AMERICAN DREAM FROM SCRATCH'

Content : (Double page spread)
Use of inscription of younger people means that the magazine can target a millennial audience, (similar to my audience). By getting first-hand perspectives from millennials the magazine can engage the reader effectively.
The use of an interview compares to my ideas for my documentary and my magazine, as by interviewing people of around the similar age to my target audience I am effectively targeting my audience.

Design and Layout :
Use of multiple images using a bright colour palette engages the millennial audience, and the use of photos creates a link to the interview and the topics discussed.
Use of medium long shots, and establishing shots address the topics discussed in the interview.
The images are of the people that were interview to create a sense of comparison, and the use of a female and a male broadens the target audience.

This research has made me decide to create a lifestyle magazine that targets both a male and female audience; and I will use inscription of one of my characters aged around 20years old to target my millennial audience. I have noticed that a convention of the lifestyle magazines I have looked at, is that they focus on one shot of someone included in the magazine; therefore, I will use an image of one of the residents I interview. In terms of design, I will use a bright colour for the title, and perhaps have a short and catchy title to engage my younger audience.

Front page for magazine (planning + drafts):

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. I also left room on the top of the shot, to allow me to use a large, and bold title to create clarity and an appeal for my audie...
