Treatment sheet for audio visual:

Themes:
I will address themes such as drugs, violence, and other mature subjects; this will direct my content to my millennial audience and engage them. By interviewing different people I will gain a variety of narratives which confront different themes which adds diversity to my show. I will explore sensitive and controversial topics when discussing people's past struggles, this will help my audience feel a sense of pathos for my characters and allow them to create emotional connections to the characters. Due to the mature subjects in my documentary, this will allow me to address the brief of targeting my show to a millennial audience aged 18-35years old.

Style and Format:
My documentary will be expository, and will focus on the characters instead of the interviewer; however I will include a voice of an interviewer to provide clarity and information to my audience. I will follow the format of a turning point by showing the individuals discuss a significant moment in their lives. I will also do this through the narratives of the characters I interview, as each person's past may have a conflict or a turning point.

Target audience and creating an audience appeal:
My target audience will be male millennials aged 18-35years old, as this follows the brief and also fits my show effectively. Using inscription I will direct my show's contents to my audience, and by exploring subjects such as poverty and wealth I will target both middle class people and working class. But mainly middle class, as my magazine and the subjects discussed in the audio-visual are factual. Also, the use of statistics relate to an audience with a high-level of education; B1/B2 socioeconomic group.

In order to create an audience appeal I have decided to select characters that will best relate to my audience members..By selecting mature topics to discuss such as drugs, violence and other emotional issues I may allow audience members to relate to these things, or have shared experiences in these areas. As well as that, my audience will have some initial understanding of the severity of homeless in the UK; so by focusing in more on the individuals behind homelessness this will create a unique perspective to the issue.

Representation:

I want to juxtapose the normal representation of homeless people that is constructed by the media, by giving the control to the people I will interview. I believe that the media construct an unfair representation of homeless people, by showing images of them being reckless and disruptive, society views homeless people as a burden on society and people who have intentions to damage society. The media often fail to acknowledge homeless people’s back stories, and therefore issues such as drug addictions may be misjudged as outsiders aren’t aware of the reason that individual is on drugs. I want to interview people with the intention of them portraying the reasons behind their situations or their pasts; in order to determine a more truthful representation of them. Also, I will interview people of different ages to gain a diverse representation of who is homeless; and despite only interviewing women on the streets I will include statistics that relate to all homeless people.

My representations of the characters will be varied, and constructed by them; despite me editing the footage, I intend for the material and representations in my show to be by the individuals themselves. I want to focus on portraying the message that homeless people are just people, not a label.

Media Language:
In order to construct my images, I will demonstrate a restricted colour pallette of bright colours through my images of Cambridge as a wealthy place and then contrast this to a dullish grey colour palette of the establishing shots of Cambridge as a place of poverty. I will use establishing shots, and long shots at the beginning of my show to set the scene and establish the location. I will also used medium close-ups and close-ups when interviewing people; and I may use tracking shots to establish the location further and create a sense of anticipation. I will use montage editing in the opening sequence to create anticipation as well, and engage my audience; then I will use continuity editing. In terms of costume and makeup, I want to create a sense of realism by not altering my character’s appearance, and showing the brutal reality of people living on the streets. I will use natural lighting in most of my shots to further create reality; and I will use some low-key lighting if I film at light to create tension.

I will use statistics and non-diegetic sound in terms of a soundtrack in the opening sequence of my show. This will relate to the well informed audience; and create a sense of realism to the show.

Front page for magazine (planning + drafts):

Planning: I took some long shot images of the individual who would represent the actor, Rob Young, who stars in the film 'The Struggle'. I selected a bright, and appealing background to engage the audience; I kept a restricted colour palette in mind when taking these images to link back to my magazine article. By using warm, yellow tones in the image I was able to create convergence between my front cover, double page spread, and the title shown in the documentary. Using the rule of three, I ensured the individual was placed in the centre of the shot, and took up the majority of the image; to convey a high status and significance of a celebrity appeal to the magazine. In terms of proxemics, I placed the individual in the centre of the shot; to engage the audience, and to allow me to place my text on either side. I also left room on the top of the shot, to allow me to use a large, and bold title to create clarity and an appeal for my audie...
