In order to gain more of an understanding about the reality of being homeless, and how shelters alike operate I visited Jimmy's Homeless Shelter on 19/09/19. I visited to help me establish how I would film my documentary, and discuss how I would acquire people to interview. I spoke to Barry who is the head of Communications, Fundraising, and Events; he was very cooperative and support and allowed me to develop my ideas. I discussed with him my intentions for my documentary and how I wanted to show a different and more truthful perspective into homeless people; and I want to focus on the individuals and their personalities and interests instead of how they may be labelled as homeless.
My conversations with him established where I would film which will be in the common room in the downstairs area of Jimmy's as this is a familiar area to the residents so it will increase the verstehen of my interviews. We confirmed days in which I could visit and film the interviews, and who I would film. I have decided to gain as much footage as I can in those two days of filming at Jimmy's to give me the best opportunity to select the relevant and most impactful content I need.
I have discussed with Barry the type of content I am looking for, and by explaining the structure and contents of my documentary he is able to help me film the best residents for my documentary. I have been in contact with him and have given him a copy of the questions I will ask the residents, so they can decide if they are willing to be involved in any interviews. I also discussed to Barry some background on the shelter and the staff which made me realise how incredible, and selfless staff in a shelter like Jimmy's are. I feel as if visiting Jimmy's was vital to my coursework process, and has given me a firm foundation to begin filming and develop my ideas.
